Community Work
This year’s community work in the Lesotho Highlands has gone above and beyond expectations. Navigating shifting weather patterns and a rugged landscape, the Makhangoa team and local villagers have worked side by side to accomplish what often feels close to impossible.
Building Bridges—Literally and Figuratively
Our primary footbridge project—linking the villages across the river to the Makhangoa school—has seen materials delivered at all hours, with everyone racing the harsh winter. It’s not just a bridge; it’s a lifeline for education and healthcare. A second bridge, designed for vehicle access, is now complete thanks to an extraordinary local effort and materials supplied by African Waters.
The School Connection and the Power of Giving
If you’ve visited Makhangoa, you’ll understand the deep-rooted bond between camp and community—especially through the local school. Donations from guests this season made an immediate impact: school uniforms, notebooks, footballs, and crayons were received with huge smiles. Toy planes brought laughter and learning to the playground in equal measure.
Capturing Faces, Sharing Stories
Our new camp host and chef, Hannah, has taken on a personal project: photographing local villagers and distributing the prints to families and schools. One image, taken at Motsoele School 15 km upriver, now hangs proudly in their classroom—another small but meaningful connection.
More Than Fishing: What Brings You Back
Makhangoa offers more than just great fishing. It’s a place of real human connection—where effort, kindness, and curiosity are always returned in full. Whether it’s sharing food, lending a hand, or learning something new, the community spirit here runs deep. You come for the water, but you stay for everything else.
We’ll be back soon to check on the bridges, reconnect with the school, and continue the community work that defines the Makhangoa experience. Until then—thank you.
