Species: Tigerfish (Tanzania), and vundu (catfish)
Hidden deep within Nyerere National Park lies one of Africa’s newest and most intriguing freshwater fisheries — the vast Julius Nyerere Dam, formed by the damming of the mighty Rufiji River. Here, a world of untouched water, tributaries, and flooded system has created an expansive habitat where tigerfish are already thriving in impressive numbers and size.
Most of the fishing on the Nyerere Dam is done along active wind-blown edges, flooded timber, and channels, turning every drift into a new challenge. These feature-rich environments are alive with baitfish, and predator fish use them as ambush points. The fishing is visual, dynamic, and highly engaging, with anglers constantly scanning water and structure.
Situated on a secluded peninsula overlooking the vast expanse of Nyerere Dam, Shangaa Camp offers a unique wilderness experience in the heart of Tanzania’s southern wilds. This expedition-style camp is erected each season to cater for small groups of sport fishing and wildlife enthusiasts.
Accommodation is made up of comfortable canvas tents, each fitted with twin beds and private en-suite bathrooms. The central living area consists of a spacious mess tent, dining area, lounge, and outdoor fire pit where guests gather after long days on the water. Wholesome meals are prepared daily by talented camp cooks, and the attentive camp staff ensure every need is met while in camp.
Shangaa Camp is situated in the heart of Nyerere National Park. Guided game drives, scenic boat cruises, and camp walks are some of the additional activities on offer.
