Species: Tigerfish (Tanzania), yellowfish, Ndungu (African pacu), vundu (catfish)
Since exploratory trips began in 2008, the Mnyera and Ruhudji Rivers in southwestern Tanzania have earned a global reputation. These rivers host some of the largest tigerfish on Earth, with specimens ranging from 10–25 lbs.
Located in a 14,000 km² concession in Nyerere National Park, the fishery is restricted to 8 rods per week, for just 12 weeks a year, with 6 rotating beats between the rivers. This ensures sustainability and top-tier fishing.
Dhala and Samaki Camps are riverside, safari-style tented camps. Each tent features river views and ensuite bathrooms. Meals are served alfresco or in dining tents with lounge, library, and bar. Electric points are available for charging devices.
Fishing is mainly done while drifting. Guides use 18ft Go Devil boats with 25hp motors, navigating timber, drop-offs, sandbanks, and rocky structure. One day each week is dedicated to fishing the rapids on foot—a trip highlight. Each boat carries two anglers, one guide, and a coxswain. All boats have first aid kits.
Dhala and Samaki Camps
The prime fishing season (September to November) at Dhala and Samaki Camps coincides with Tanzania’s peak game-viewing months. Located within a 14,000 km² private concession in Nyerere National Park, guests will have ample opportunities to enjoy outstanding game viewing and birding while fly fishing. Commonly encountered wildlife includes elephants, buffalo, numerous antelope species, hippos, crocodiles, lions, and even leopards and wild dogs. Birding is equally exceptional, with many endemic and rare species found in the region.
