DHALA & SAMAKI

Tanzania | August to November
Tour Details
  • August to November
  • 8 Anglers
  • Tanzania, East Africa
  • 7 Nights, 6 Fishing Days

Species: Tigerfish (Tanzania), yellowfish, Ndungu (African pacu), vundu (catfish)

Since exploratory trips began in 2008, the Mnyera and Ruhudji Rivers in southwestern Tanzania have earned a global reputation. These rivers host some of the largest tigerfish on Earth, with specimens ranging from 10–25 lbs.

Located in a 14,000 km² concession in Nyerere National Park, the fishery is restricted to 8 rods per week, for just 12 weeks a year, with 6 rotating beats between the rivers. This ensures sustainability and top-tier fishing.

The Camps:

Dhala and Samaki Camps are riverside, safari-style tented camps. Each tent features river views and ensuite bathrooms. Meals are served alfresco or in dining tents with lounge, library, and bar. Electric points are available for charging devices.

The Fly-Fishing:

Fishing is mainly done while drifting. Guides use 18ft Go Devil boats with 25hp motors, navigating timber, drop-offs, sandbanks, and rocky structure. One day each week is dedicated to fishing the rapids on foot—a trip highlight. Each boat carries two anglers, one guide, and a coxswain. All boats have first aid kits.

Beyond the Fishing

Dhala and Samaki Camps

The prime fishing season (September to November) at Dhala and Samaki Camps coincides with Tanzania’s peak game-viewing months. Located within a 14,000 km² private concession in Nyerere National Park, guests will have ample opportunities to enjoy outstanding game viewing and birding while fly fishing. Commonly encountered wildlife includes elephants, buffalo, numerous antelope species, hippos, crocodiles, lions, and even leopards and wild dogs. Birding is equally exceptional, with many endemic and rare species found in the region.

Dedicated Photographic Safari Add-Ons

For anglers seeking a bespoke East African safari, we recommend extending your trip with a visit to one of Tanzania’s world-class national parks. African Waters partners with exclusive camps in the Serengeti and Ruaha National Park to provide unforgettable safari experiences. This is the ideal opportunity to have your non-fishing friends and family come over and join you. Other highlights to consider include a trip to Zanzibar’s tropical beaches and cultural sites or a Kilimanjaro expedition.

Feedback from our Guests:

  • As an outfitter, fly fishing business owner and guide myself of 25 years, I always try to stack up other operations and other fellow guides I encounter. I pride myself on hard work, long days for the client, enthusiasm, and fisheries knowledge. Greg, Blaede, Tim and Ollie filled everyone of these criteria better than any other operation I’ve ever had the pleasure to fish with. Their day long enthusiasm for what they do paired with their knowledge and work ethic is often hard to find. I always try to instil in those that work for me that we’re in the entertainment business as fly fishing guides. Our job is simply to entertain the client through our knowledge, enthusiasm and hard work. In short, I was more than entertained. Keep up the good work and we will no doubt see you again.

  • I have been fortunate enough to experience several different fly-fishing destinations around the world with outfitters that have done a really good job. I can honestly say that African Waters and the team are now at the top of the list. I was amazed how smoothly and professionally every detail was handled, especially given the fact that there must be significant logistical challenges to make everything happen.
Greg, Blaede, Oliver and Tim are as good as it gets at what they do, and your entire staff delivered at a very high level.
The Tigerfish didn’t disappoint either. The f*ckers are crazy but I love em.

  • It’s truly amazing that African Waters is more concerned about keeping the fishing as good as they can, as opposed to overfishing it for commercial gain. This is rare these days, even in catch and release fisheries like yours. What a great experience with a great team.

  • You guys really have it together! This is a really top notch outfit! A really great balance of fun, chance of success, teaching, and safety. Great service. Great food. Fantastic location. Seriously… Thank you!

  • AW is hands down the best outfitter I’ve worked with for my fishing trips. Africa is a tricky destination where safety and professionalism are that much more critical. Your guides and staff always do a top-notch job and I feel safe in areas that are incredibly remote.
