Yellowfish Fishing in Lesotho

Another unforgettable week of yellowfish fishing in Lesotho, where the smallmouth yellows were out and ready to play—and so were the crew from the Eastern Cape, who brought serious energy (and a few tuna-worthy hook sets) to the mountains.

A Heavy-Handed Start Turns into Magic

Things kicked off with the Duxbury father-and-son duo showing us how it’s done. Although, in classic saltwater fashion, the first few fish were either launched into orbit or snapped off by hook sets more suited to tuna than yellows. Once everyone settled into river rhythm, the fishing came alive.

Dry Fly Action and Tactical Nymphing

The yellows were quick to rise to dries, making for exciting surface eats. But when it was time to get technical, deep pools like those at Eagles View turned into double-nymph hotspots, delivering serious numbers and big rewards.

Big Fish Highlights of the Week

Simon and Andrew Wormald were on fire, landing three fish over 60cm on nymphs. Mike Duxbury earned his stripes with a monster yellow landed entirely by hand after tangling his fly line mid-fight. A proper cowboy move—and it worked.

Craig, our dry fly purist, had a field day in the pocket water, sight-fishing to trout with precision and consistency. No fuss, just fish after fish on top.

Camp Life, Dice Nights, and Cold Ales

We also had a surprise visit from guide Chris Matthew. His fishing was dialled, but his dice game… not so much. The late-night lies dice sessions were full of banter and lessons in humility.

Off the water, cold beers vanished faster than a yellow on a missed strike, and the hike upriver delivered breathtaking views of bearded vultures soaring overhead. Every meal hit the spot, and the fireside laughs carried on well into the early hours.

Why Fish the Bokong River?

Consistent dry fly action, big fish on nymphs, intimate pocket water, world-class scenery, and the unbeatable vibe of Makhangoa Community Camp—the Bokong ticks every box for South African anglers chasing something different.
