Bokong Yellowfish Fly Angling – Makhangoa Community Camp

Bokong Yellowfish Fly Angling

The rain finally arrived. The river has transformed from clear and barely flowing to dirty and roaring. The murky water sent the yellows scurrying back into the dam, prompting our Bokong Yellowfish Fly Angling to take a new twist. With the Malibamat’so River as our alternative, we embraced the change and relished throwing streamers into the river, even landing some wild rainbow trout. Those tan and brown game-changers were pure magic.

Perfect Conditions and Technique

We returned to find the river flowing clearly once more, with the gold slabs actively on the move. Initially, the fish were a tad shy with the dries, and we ended up hooking most of them on the dropper (gold bead perdigons). Persistence in our Bokong Yellowfish Angling efforts soon paid off, as each cast became an opportunity to refine our technique.

From Twitching Nymphs to Incredible Catches

Heading upriver to Three Falls and Oh So Technical on our final day, the challenge escalated with fish holding deep in the pools. The solution? Twitching nymphs. After a long, somewhat frustrating day on the water—with clients getting ‘gatvol’—our determination prevailed. Just as we were about to call it a day, Guides Aiden and David spotted an impressive Balbyter (ant) hatch on the horizon. They encouraged clients (Danie, Mike, Jack, and Solly) to stick around for just another hour. Hesitant at first, the crew soon got into the thrill of Bokong Yellowfish Angling as the fish went absolutely berserk—almost every cast resulted in a fish conversion. Special shout-out to Jack and Danie, who landed the season’s first two yellow slabs over 60cm on a dry fly.

Final Moments

On our journey home, just after 5pm, Guide Ryan and clients Brett and Lyndal requested a pickup at Makhangoa Village. As we arrived, one last cast led to a double hookup—Brett and Lyndal engaged in a proper battle, with both fish eventually coming to the net. What a week it’s been! We enjoyed top-notch meals, refreshing cold bevvies, and shared plenty of laughter and memorable moments against the stunning mountainous backdrop of Makhangoa.
