After a week’s break with no clients in camp, we welcomed both a returning group and several new clients from South Africa, all eager to experience the spring tide fishing over the new moon.

We were still awaiting the much-needed rains as the lagoon water levels were unusually low. Because of this, we discovered that the best fishing occurred during the dead low tide, transitioning into the pushing tide. This is when we finally had an outgoing current from the mouth, allowing freshwater to flow into the sea—an ideal time for mullet to come into the mouth. And where there’s mullet, the big predatory fish are sure to follow.

Fishing Success During Low Lagoon Spring Tides

Despite the abundance of baitfish, the fishing proved challenging. Long hours of patience paid off, however, with our anglers landing some incredible catches, including snapper, threadfin, and impressively large kob. While the elusive tarpon remained out of reach, likely feeding offshore, the thrill of fishing persisted. This is the nature of fishing before the rains; one day can be wild, while the next is a test of endurance. The group also had some fun hooking into bull sharks, which are currently in abundance. Sometimes their baits were taken within mere seconds of hitting the water!
