Sette Cama Fishing Report: The first camp briefing set the tone for the week. Ed had barely started before Ewan Naudé fired off a quip from the back of the room, and the laughter that followed showed this was going to be a lively crew—despite the dry pre-season conditions. Spirits were high, and everyone was eager to see what the week of Sette Cama fishing would deliver.

Arrival

Travelling in Africa always comes with its quirks. On this trip, our plane was briefly rerouted to Tchibanga to offload four tons of goods—mostly beer, with our week’s coffee supply somehow included in the mix. It vanished into the system, never to be seen again. Luckily, spirits stayed high and guests arrived ready for the week ahead, fuelled (mostly) by Nescafé and plenty of laughs.

The fishing

As this Sette Cama Fishing Report shows, planning a trip in the dry season is always a gamble, especially with fly. If you hit a mullet run, you can have some of the best fishing of your life, but it’s unpredictable. This week proved the point. Tarpon, threadfin and kob were scarce, but jacks showed up around the mouth most evenings, with some incredible surface eats on poppers.

The real stars were the snappers. While no absolute-unit cuberas came to hand, the microjigging in the lagoon was electric. Plenty of heavy brown snappers hit the deck, and more than a few jigs were lost to unstoppable fish that simply couldn’t be turned on light tackle. If you’ve never hooked one before, imagine a poensie—only stronger, dirtier, and even more determined.

Barracuda were also around in good numbers. They’re less charming than snappers, with the smelly teeth of the ocean and the vindictive energy of a neurotic chihuahua, but a couple of proper specimens still found their way into the mix.

To finish

That wraps up a bit of a wildcard week before the main season kicks off. All signs point to a strong start—fingers crossed for some early rain, big tarpon, cold beers. If you’re planning your next adventure, this is the time to get in touch.
