After a few good days of rain and a blown out river, returning MCC guests, Nish and Dale, bought along David and Reinhard, arriving in camp with big smiles and high hopes for the next few days of fishing in the Lesotho highlands. The Bokong was still murky and high, so the decision was made to target the feisty rainbows of the Malibamatso, and possibly hook into one of the shy browns tucked into the rolling grassbeds in the tailwater of Katse Dam. The strategy paid off as Dale was hooking into some golden Malibamatso yellowfish, while the Bokong River was settling down and cleaning.

The lower beats of the Bokong were on the agenda for the last half of the trip, with high hopes that the big rains had brought in a fresh run of yellows. Even though the water had not cleared to sight-fishing standards yet, we were sure there would be fish moving up the river for their annual summer pilgrimage. It wasn’t long before we were getting stuck into some powerful yellows with backing peeling through the guides, the occasional tippet popping, and a hook or two opening. As the the water clarity improved and raised in temperature, the fishing improved as well, ending the week on a high.

The Bokong has really come alive in the last few days with the river being back to normal water levels and clarity. The next few days should be really interesting.
