Faro Fishing

This past week at Gassa Camp, we welcomed a brilliant mix of anglers from around the world for a truly memorable Faro fishing experience. Scott Shuttleworth, a seasoned South African fisherman working in remote parts of the continent, was joined by UK mates Fergus Kelly and Miles Beharrell. Completing the crew was David Pugh, an American fly fishing enthusiast currently based in Saudi Arabia. Together, they brought humour, patience, and plenty of enthusiasm to the Faro River.

Tough Conditions, Strong Spirits

The Faro didn’t make things easy. Low water levels and selective fish meant the team had to grind for their success. But with steady determination and a good dose of camp banter, the week rolled on with energy and optimism. Every guest kept at it, backed by some brilliant guiding and a cold Doppel or two at day’s end.

Electric Moments and Unusual Catches

While there were no giants this time, every angler landed each of the main target species—and a few unusual extras. Fergus takes the honours here, managing to land two Electric Catfish on fly. Not exactly the most sought-after species, but definitely one to remember. Rare, unpredictable, and genuinely shocking, they made for great fireside stories.

Cigars, Tall Tales and Camp Camaraderie

Fergus and Miles turned their daily cigar break into an occasion, patiently educating the guiding team on the finer points of cigar enjoyment. It wasn’t just about the smoke though—these sessions became a highlight, filled with old stories, laughter, and exaggerated fish sizes. A reminder that the best part of a fishing trip often happens between the casts.

Until Next Time

It wasn’t a week of easy wins, but it was packed with character, effort, and a group of anglers who truly made the most of their time on the Faro. Thanks to all for the laughs, the stories, and the persistence.
