Nile perch flyfishing in Africa
Gassa Camp on the Faro River in Cameroon continues to prove itself as one of the most extraordinary destinations for Nile perch flyfishing in Africa. Now in the second week of the season, we welcomed George Pearson, who etched his name into the camp’s history with a fish that can only be described as the catch of a lifetime – a Nile perch measuring an astonishing 138cm in length with an 88cm girth.
The Pristine Faro River
For years, we searched for a fishery that could deliver world-class fly fishing opportunities for Nile perch. In 2018, our exploration led us to the Faro River, a pristine waterway that runs through one of the last intact Sahelo-Sudanian ecosystems. Thanks to key partnerships with Dr. Koen Maes and Xavier Vannier, we now operate in a remote yet thriving 120km section of river bordering Faro National Park. Our presence in the area goes beyond fishing; it actively supports conservation efforts, anti-poaching initiatives, and the long-term goal of establishing a unified Faro River Basin conservation plan.
An Unforgettable Week on the Water
After an exciting start to the season last week, this second week brought its own share of drama. While tigerfish provided their usual high-energy action, it was the pursuit of Nile perch that truly defined this trip. As the Faro’s waters continued to drop, fish movements shifted, challenging our anglers to adapt their approach. George’s incredible perch was a testament to persistence, skill, and a bit of good fortune – an unforgettable moment captured in our latest video blog.
