Yellowfish in Lesotho
The water levels are still low, with the flow barely creeping along, leaving fish stuck in the deeper pools. But when it comes to fishing for yellowfish in Lesotho, persistence pays off. Home Pool? That was the MVP of the week—hands down the best spot, producing most of the fish of the trip.
Challenging Conditions at Makhangoa Community Camp
As a group, everyone managed to land some solid fish at Makhangoa Community Camp. Not that it was easy. We worked hard for those fish.
Exploring New Waters
A long but beautiful 20km upriver trek turned out to be quite the experience for all of us. We explored some unfamiliar waters, and it paid off—everyone got in on the action, catching fish on dry flies or at least getting some solid interest. Except Greg. But who’s counting? Along the way, we spotted mountain rhebok, bearded vultures, and those stunning golden slabs. Fishing for yellowfish in Lesotho certainly has its challenges, but the rewards are well worth it.
Unforgettable Moments on the River
One of the highlights had to be when Aiden, one of our guides, realised he’d left his phone by the river. So, naturally, he scaled down a mountain and sprinted 2km in about 2 minutes to get it back. Only to find the clients had already found it in his bag and were taking some very interesting selfies.
Special mention goes to Tim, who snapped off a dry-dropper rig after striking too hard, only to land the exact same fish 5 minutes later, with the same rig still in its mouth. Skill. Chris also deserves kudos for landing a massive 61cm golden slab on a nymph. And Trevor had an impressive week, snapping off 2 or 3 fish every day on 6X tippet, pushing it to the limit. But on the last day, he finally landed his first fish, then followed it up with 4 more. Slow learner, but he got there! Will also deserves a mention for snapping off 5-6 fish in the morning before switching to his default setting: tiger strip striking at every yellowfish. He finally landed one on 4X tippet.
A Week to Remember
What an epic week. We were blessed with some amazing weather—boiling hot, even though we really need the rain. We were spoiled with fantastic food and had some of the most stunning views imaginable. And of course, there was the banter. Fireside laughs, dinner table discussions that occasionally ventured into very dark humour, and just an all-around hilarious time. Fish, fun, and unforgettable memories all around.
