Tarpon Fishing in Costa Rica
The Rio Colorado in Costa Rica has earned its place as one of the world’s premier destinations for tarpon fishing in Costa Rica. With its perfect mix of fresh and saltwater, abundant baitfish, and legendary reputation dating back to the mid-20th century, it’s a must-visit spot for anglers chasing the thrill of landing a giant silver king. Famous fishermen like Ted Williams have battled these river titans here, adding to its mystique. Today, conservation efforts ensure the river remains a thriving habitat, making every cast an unforgettable adventure. Join me as I share two incredible weeks fishing these iconic waters.
Prime Conditions for Tarpon Fishing
As September rolled in, the anticipation was palpable. Every year, we visit this famous fishery during its absolute prime. With a favourable moon phase and the Gulf to the north deep in hurricane season, the Caribbean around the Rio Colorado often remains calm, with flat seas and barely a whisper of wind—perfect conditions for tarpon fishing in Costa Rica.
After a short flight over volcanoes and jungle, we arrived at our destination. This week, I was joined by three anglers from China, marking a personal first. It’s brilliant to see Chinese anglers starting to explore and experience the incredible fisheries the world has to offer.
A Slow Start, but Big Rewards
The week began on a slower note than usual. While we spotted plenty of fish rolling and feeding during specific windows, the explosive action this place is famous for was initially absent. Still, all three anglers managed to hook into some truly massive tarpon, though each fish ultimately got the better of them. In between, we landed some impressive jack crevalle, which seemed to favour chartreuse-coloured lures, especially during the lower tides.
A Battle for the Ages
Day three brought a dramatic change of pace when Quan hooked into an absolute monster of a tarpon. The battle was intense, with the blazing Caribbean sun adding an extra layer of challenge. After a gruelling 90-minute fight, Quan emerged victorious, landing the beast with a bucktail jig fished slowly. The joy and exhaustion on his face said it all—an unforgettable moment that will forever remain a highlight of our journey.
From that point, the fishing truly took off. Fly fishing, jigs, and live bait all produced spectacular results. A standout moment was when Zilu Min, the least experienced angler of the group but brimming with enthusiasm, hooked into a sizeable jack crevalle. Despite the fish’s power, her determination paid off. Witnessing her success was a personal highlight for me—it’s always a privilege to see someone achieve their angling goals.
Closing an Unforgettable Week
As the week progressed, the action only intensified. On the final day, George capped off the trip by landing a lively young tarpon. It put on an energetic show, leaping and splashing around the boat before finally being brought to hand.
