Gabon Fishing Trip

This Gabon fishing trip saw a group of South African anglers return for another week on the coast. A mix of spinning tackle, bait setups and a few fly rods meant they were set up for whatever the week brought.

From the start, there was no shortage of action. The group settled in quickly and worked through the different options available between the lagoon and the beach.

Lagoon Sessions and Steady Jack Action

The lagoon produced consistently, with long fin jacks showing up regularly across the week.

Some sessions took a bit more time, but when fish were around, they ate. Enrico had a standout fish on fly, landing a jack of around 10 kilograms, which easily made his trip.

There were also a few good opportunities on fly throughout the week, particularly in the calmer lagoon water where presentation counted.

Evenings on the Beach

The evening sessions in the surf kept everyone busy.

Jacks feeding behind the waves meant plenty of casting and long sessions. It was physical at times, and not everyone pushed through every session, but those who did found opportunities.

As the tides shifted, fish moved closer. Snapper and threadfin came into range, and a few solid fish were landed during these windows. Ricciardo picked up a quality threadfin, while Enrico landed his first fish on a new spinning setup, a small tarpon.

Mixing It Up When Conditions Changed

As the week moved along, the group mixed up their approach.

Clyde and Patrick spent time fishing bait and picked up a few different species, including a big sea barbel. Lionel focused on sharks and landed a couple of solid bull sharks.

Dave, who was relatively new to fishing, took on a shark setup and ended up landing a bull shark of around 100 kilograms after a proper fight.

A Week With Good Variety

Across the week, the group covered a bit of everything. Jacks, tarpon, threadfin, snapper, kob and sharks all featured.

Between the lagoon and the surf, there was always something to focus on depending on conditions. For those fishing fly, the lagoon continued to offer the most consistent opportunities, especially when things settled.

Planning Your Gabon Fishing Trip

If you are looking at a Gabon fishing trip, it helps to arrive with a mix of gear and an open approach to how you fish during the week.

If you prefer to fish fly only, there are also specific weeks where the focus shifts more in that direction and conditions are better suited to it.

The anglers who got the most out of this trip were the ones who worked with what was in front of them and stayed flexible.
