Wildlife encounters at Sette Cama
This week, in a twist on our usual “Catch of the Week,” the standout moment was an unforgettable leopard sighting— wildlife encounters at Sette Cama that rivals any fishing tale. Such a rare experience seems to happen more often than expected in this remarkable place.
A day like no other
One morning, a few clients decided they’d like to go for a jungle walk, hoping to spot some gorillas or chimps. We set off early and trekked for about half an hour with little sign of wildlife.
Eventually, we emerged into a grassland clearing, finding fresh buffalo and elephant tracks, though the animals had already moved on. As we continued to the edge of another clearing, we spotted a group of buffalo grazing ahead. With the wind in our favour, they hadn’t noticed us, allowing us to quietly get within about 20 metres. We watched in awe for a minute or two, but the moment was cut short when someone sneezed, and the buffalo scattered.
We moved towards where they’d been, and as we entered the clearing, our guide quickly motioned towards the far side. There, to our amazement, was a leopard! It dashed across the clearing, then turned and ran along the tree line on the opposite side, coming within 50 metres of us before slipping back into the thick jungle. Spotting a leopard in daylight was an unforgettable, incredibly rare sight—perhaps even rarer than glimpsing gorillas in the wild!
