Tour Details
  • November to May
  • 8 Anglers
  • Lesotho, Southern Africa
  • 3-10 Night Option

Species: Smallmouth yellowfish, rainbow trout, brown trout

MCC has earned a reputation for offering Africa’s finest dry fly sight fishing. Guests have access to over 20 km of pristine yellowfish water, with the unique opportunity to target both rainbow and brown trout in the same river system.

Alongside the fly fishing, visitors experience the vibrant culture and natural beauty of Lesotho’s mountain communities.

The Lodge:

Built to resemble a traditional Basotho homestead, the camp blends into the mountain environment. There are four stone-and-thatch rondavels, each sleeping two (with an option for a king-size bed). Each rondavel features a private veranda overlooking the river.

The central living space includes:

  • Outdoor deck with pizza oven and fireplace
  • Indoor lounge with fireplace
  • Open-plan kitchen with bar-style dining table

Electricity is solar-powered (220v), with plug points in the living area. The camp is serviced by two boutique bathrooms, each featuring a clawfoot bath, fireplace, shower, toilet, and double vanity. Bedding and towels are provided.

The Fly-Fishing:

Arguably Africa’s best sight fishing experience. Dry flies are the go-to, though nymphs and streamers are used when needed. Wet-wading and walk-and-stalk techniques are common. During high water, anglers use drift boats where the Bokong River flows into Katse Dam.

The Community Camp Model:

The MCC, a partnership between African Waters and the Makhangoa Community, launched in 2012. It has become a benchmark for community-based fly fishing ventures in Africa.

Making a Difference:

  • Community Levies: Included in all guest packages and paid to the Makhangoa Community Tourism Council for projects chosen by the community.
  • Fundraising: Additional funds are raised for high-impact projects like bridge building, solar lights, and school supplies.
  • Employment: All staff—permanent and casual—are from the local community.
  • Skills Development: Camp builders, rangers, managers, and housekeeping staff are trained in-house. Over 40 housekeeping staff are employed on a rotating basis, with up to 50 casual laborers involved during maintenance periods.

  • We had a fantastic stay and will be back again next year. Our 4 guides, Ryan, Otto, Aiden and Chris were exceptional, patient and full value and our host, Hannah, was brilliant. MCC is a world-class destination and thanks to all who accommodated us.

  • It was an absolute pleasure and privilege to spend time with you at your Lesotho lodge. It is the mark of an excellent operation, when the fishing has been tough (due to a river blow out), but you still rate it as one of your best fishing trips ever, which is exactly how I would rate this trip! From the moment we arrived in camp, everything ran like clockwork. The quality of the camp staff, who were always available, but never in the way, was excellent. The rooms were very comfortable and clean, and the evening showers were always pipping hot. What really sets your operation apart from many of your competitors, however, is the quality of your guides. I am obviously a bit biased, but every one of your guides were not only excellent flyfishing guides, but wonderful young men, who conducted themselves superbly in the social environment, and were interesting, intelligent, and excellent company to spend time with. They clearly work very well together as a team and supported each other to ensure that our stay was as enjoyable as possible, even though the Bokong was making fishing a challenge for them. The culinary skills, and quality of meals they presented was truly world class. It is no surprise to me therefore that African Waters holds the reputation of being one of the best flyfishing outfitters in the world and is a reputation you thoroughly deserve. I sincerely look forward to fishing at one of your other camps in the near future.

  • Everything at Makhangoa was phenomenal. The guides were incredibly professional, knowledgeable, fun, and enjoyable to be around. I especially appreciated how the guides shared meals with the clients; it was my first time experiencing this at a lodge, and it added such a lovely touch, creating a more shared and communal experience. I am genuinely impressed by the accommodations, the quality of fishing, the community involvement, and the consistently positive social impact that Makhangoa continues to create. What sets Makhangoa apart for me is that it’s the most secure I have felt at a lodge. The freedom to run on my own, to explore, and to just be fully present is a feeling I do not often encounter- especially when traveling to “remote” destinations. It provided a sense of tranquillity and safety that allowed me to immerse myself fully in the experience. The unique aspect further solidified my appreciation for the Makhangoa community. This places exudes a unique charm, and it’s evident how much love has gone into crafting this camp. I eagerly anticipate sharing this extraordinary place with others.
