To target the magnificent blue tigerfish (Hydrocynus tanzaniae) in these waters, we recommend equipping yourself with 9wt fast action rods, expertly matched with a reel of the same size. Unlike many tiger fisheries, where lighter 6-8wt setups are preferred, Dhala & Samaki’s larger fish and bigger flies necessitate the power of heavier rod/line weight, allowing for excellent casting accuracy and ample pulling strength when these powerful fish take the bait.
Sink Tip Lines for Fast-Flowing Waters plus the thrill of topwater fishing
As you navigate the fast-flowing water, a sink tip line is your ally for getting your flies to the correct depth. The Intermediate running line with a sinking head provides the necessary sinking action while keeping your flies in the strike zone. Later in the season, when the water level recedes, intermediate lines can also come in handy.
