With temperatures soaring above 35°C, it was certainly a scorcher of a weekend. Although the fishing came with its challenges, the stunning scenery and thrilling experiences made every moment worthwhile.

Fishing Highlights on the Orange River

The first day kicked off with an impressive tally of four largemouth yellows caught! But the true highlight came when one of our guides suggested a long cast over a shallow bank, right alongside the reeds. As soon as the fly hit the water, it looked like a steam train had just taken off down the river. What followed was an exhilarating chase, as the fish wrapped around a tree and we had to scramble to follow it downstream. After a hefty fight that had us all on the edge of our seats, we successfully landed a massive barbel. It was a moment of pure triumph and a testament to the thrill of fishing.

Fast forward to the evening of day three, and our keen-eyed guides spotted carp moving into the shallows. We decided to try our luck with a squirmy wormy fly to mimic a tasty river treat. After numerous attempts, one determined carp finally swallowed it whole and took off! What ensued was a 25-30 minute battle with this colossal creature weighing 14 kg. When we finally netted it, we were met with the sight of its massive red lips—a true trophy of our time on the water.

But the adventure didn’t stop with fishing! We were treated to jaw-dropping sunsets and refreshing sundowners atop the bare yet beautiful mountains surrounding the river. Between fishing excursions, we mined for diamonds and unique rocks in the numerous potholes dotting the riverbank. We even surfed a fantastic wave and spotted some incredible scorpions and birds that added to the rich tapestry of our experience.
