Tarpon fishing on the fly
While fishing a morning session on the south bank with Ewan Naude, Devon, Paul, and Nick, we witnessed some impressive tarpon fishing on the fly. We saw tarpon smashing mullet on a shallow bank, within range of our flies. The team quickly spread out across the bank and began casting their flies over the breaking waves.
In just five minutes, Ewan hooked a fish. It jumped immediately and took off, indicating it was a substantial catch. The tarpon ran towards the back bank while Ewan applied maximum pressure, mindful of the many sharks in the area. Despite the challenging conditions—breaking waves and a tightly locked reel—Ewan managed to bring the fish to the side fairly quickly.
The steep bank posed a challenge as Ewan needed to time his effort perfectly to beach the fish with a surging wave. It was a tricky task, as the hook could easily fall out of the tarpon’s mouth. Ultimately, with a well-timed big wave, Ewan succeeded in pulling the fish up, and the guide was able to secure it.
This catch marked the opening of the tarpon season on the fly in the surf during the day—a truly special achievement. Well done, Ewan!
