Setté Cama bullshark fishing – An Unforgettable Experience

Setté Cama bullshark fishing

Setté Cama bullshark fishing is often overshadowed by the area’s reputation for tarpon, snapper, threadfin, and kob fishing from the shore, which is why most anglers flock here. However, Sette Cama is also one of the best places in the world to target bull sharks —and not just any bull sharks, but big ones. If you’re after a serious challenge, and looking to test your strength, bull shark fishing with the right gear offers some of the most exhilarating experiences you can have on the water.

The Gear and Technique for Bullsharks

The way we fish for bull sharks here is by using a sizeable fish as live bait – typically a jack weighing 3 kilograms or more. The bait needs to be big enough to swim back out despite the weight of the line attached to it. We use a 14/0 circle hook, rigged with about 2 metres of 200-250lb steel leader through the live bait’s anal fin. The bait is free-spooled out until it’s far enough from shore – usually around 30 metres. Above the steel, we rig about 20-30 metres of 200lb mono, which helps when pulling the shark through the shore break. Behind this, there’s a 200-metre top shot of 120lb mono, and underneath, 1000 metres of 100lb braid.

Once the live bait is in position, we stop it from swimming out further and let it sit. It usually doesn’t take long before it gets eaten. When the shark takes the bait, we let it eat for a few seconds before tightening the line, allowing the circle hook to lodge securely in the corner of the shark’s mouth, where it can easily and safely be removed once landed.

An Epic Bullshark Catch at Sette Cama

Just last week, we swam a live bait in the surf near camp, where the sharks are not as densely populated as at the mouth but are often much larger. We let the fish swim about 200 metres offshore, following the current to keep it at a 90-degree angle to the shore. It lasted about 10 minutes before getting picked up. We tensioned the line, and we were tight.

At first, we thought it was a small shark because it came within 50 metres of the shore very quickly and without much resistance. However, just as it reached the back line, it turned and peeled off 300 metres of line in a single run – it probably didn’t even realise it was hooked until then!

After an hour and 20 minutes, we managed to bring it back to the back line. It stayed there for another 30 minutes, with us gaining and losing line. Finally, as it reached the mid-break, the waves and current helped wear it out. After two hours, we landed a stunning bull shark weighing approximately 273 kilograms. The circle hook was perfectly set in the corner of its mouth, making it quick and easy to remove, take a few pictures, and send her back to the ocean, where she swam off strong. What an epic fish!
