Orange River fishing adventures

On this trip, two lifelong friends joined forces with two eager fishermen from the flyfishing nation, set on catching fish and a few tales to tell. We kicked off with the scorching desert heat, winding our way to the water with Gemsbok trotting in the distance and a martial eagle’s shadow sweeping across the arid plains. Hardly two hours on the water, and Dro, one of our brave anglers, cast behind a rock in the current. At first, he thought he’d snagged it, but then the line took off downstream. Sixty-four centimetres later, he was holding a prime largemouth yellowfish, grinning as wide as the river. Not ten minutes after that, Duan hooked a golden smallie right near an inlet—a gorgeous 50cm addition to the day’s haul.

A Golden Day of Fishing on the Orange River

The next stretch of the river was as golden as it gets, with nineteen yellows landed as the group worked their way through banked tree roots and undercut nooks. It was fishing heaven, punctuated by the unmistakable shouts of two anglers under one overhanging tree, who managed to bring in four fish in record time. Between fish in hand and laughter filling the air, the river couldn’t have been kinder.

As we hit the faster-flowing channels, two perfectly placed casts resulted in a breathtaking double-up—one smallie measuring 51cm, the other 53cm, a sight to make any angler’s season. When the rods were finally stowed, we set off on foot, hiking the rugged hills for one last view of the green river cutting through the ocean of desert sand. Back at camp, the night wrapped up around a campfire with tales worthy of legends, wild jokes, and promises to meet again. The Orange River fishing experience served up everything we’d hoped for and more—a perfect close to an unforgettable season.
