Loango Gabon – Africa’s Hidden Gem

Loango Gabon

Loango Gabon

The last two weeks at Sette Cama brought together a group of 10 veteran anglers, some of whom have been exploring these iconic waters since the 1980s. Situated within Loango Gabon, Sette Cama offers a rare opportunity to experience unspoiled nature and world-class fishing. This group showcased a wide range of skills, from fly fishing to targeting sharks and other underwater giants.

Tarpon Frenzy in the Surf

Mornings were spent micro-jigging the lagoon or waiting for bull sharks on the beach. As the sun dipped below the horizon, the group turned their focus to the surf and lagoon mouth, where tarpon created unforgettable scenes.

In the “baie,” a perfectly formed hole and gutter in the surf provided ideal conditions for these powerful fish. Against a backdrop of vibrant sunsets, tarpon silhouettes emerged, chasing mullet in the white water just metres from shore. Only poppers and floating stickbaits elicited strikes, leading to spectacular hook-ups. While landing these elusive fish proved challenging, the fly anglers in the lagoon mouth had more success, bringing in several tarpon up to 40 kg, alongside cubera snapper and otolithes.

Record-Breaking Sharks

Niklas, a shark angler with unmatched preparation, spent mornings on the beach near camp, landing five bull sharks ranging from 180 kg to 300 kg. However, the final day brought an extraordinary moment: a massive tiger shark, estimated at 400 kg, was landed after an intense battle. This rare catch, possibly the first of its kind in Loango Gabon, solidified Sette Cama’s reputation as a destination for exceptional shark fishing.

The Untouched Beauty of Loango Gabon

Sette Cama is nestled within Loango National Park, often called the “Last Eden of Africa.” This pristine wilderness is home to a diverse array of wildlife, including forest elephants, hippos, buffalo, gorilla, chimpanzees,  and vibrant birdlife. Anglers can cast their lines while elephants roam nearby or marvel at hippos playing in the lagoon. Loango Gabon’s unique combination of ecosystems, from mangroves to savannahs, offers a fishing experience like no other.
