Kalahari Wilderness
Kalahari Wilderness: The first day on the water was tough. A slight rise in water levels threw us off, and even our trusted ‘honey holes’ weren’t producing as expected. We managed to land a few smaller smallmouth and largemouth yellowfish, but it was a slow start to the trip.
A Turnaround on Day Three
Day three, however, was when things really turned around. An early morning session had us wading through fast water, navigating side channels with anticipation. That’s when the magic happened. A husband and wife team, Jan and Adrienne Bouwer, swinging streamers across a fast-flowing channel just above the well-known “Train Station” rapid, hit the jackpot. After a smooth swing and just two strips in, Adrienne hooked into a bus of a smallmouth yellowfish. Not ten seconds later, Jan followed suit, going tight on a solid largemouth. A double-up of a lifetime! Both fish were netted, admired, and released safely.
A Legendary Catch from Dave
Then there was Dave, an 83-year-old legend, who’s been fishing these waters for years. The first four days were tough on him, and the guides were scratching their heads trying to get him onto a good fish. It came down to the wire. In the final kilometre before pick-up, at the last fishing spot with some flowing water, Dave hooked into a beast. What followed was a battle for the ages. With decades of experience, Dave played the fish perfectly and landed a stunning 60cm smallmouth yellowfish. It was a fish that could only come from the Kalahari Wilderness – truly one for the books.
